Great photo series on The Morning News but I couldn’t disagree more with this being depressing. In fact I think its kind of exhilarating. It feels like nature doing away with something unnecessary and personally I think represent the best of what has come out of our most recent recession.
It happens to me every year. As Christmas approaches and retailer reports reach a fever pitch, I undertake a yearly analysis of corporate culture and seek out the writings with opposing viewpoints. This year its been revisiting videos like the Story of Stuff and their new one on Cap & Trade and finishing Life Inc. As far back as I can remember, I have always hated shopping malls. I find them to be soulless and lonely. In his book Douglas Rushkoff recounts the history of malls and the creation of “atmospherics”, the science of manipulating shoppers to buy more. Hopefully the loss of these palaces to consumerism will mean a return to local, connected and meaningful planning for our communities.

Dead malls are among the most depressing things in the world.
