Ha. Funny new Tumblr from my friend D-Lo with anecdotes of the annoying song requests he gets at clubs.
This reminds me of the night I was in a hotel room at the Gramercy with Sebastian Bach and Axl Rose and about 20 other people at 2 am. I sat next to a girl and started to talk to me and she was looking at pictures of Axl she has taken on her camera. She had a self important attitude to people around her I found insulting so I started to talk to her.
me: Who’s thatgirl: Are you serious?me: What are you talking about?girl: That’s Axl Rose?me: Who’s he?girl: … (2 minute diatribe on the history of rock n’ roll etc)me: (ignoring her) Man its like a jungle in here right now. girl: (no response)me: I feel a little estranged at this party, are you having a good time? girl: Totally!me: What’s your favorite song by this guy? girl: Sweet child of mineme: Figures (at which time she realizes I know them and I walk away).

girl: can you play some tupac?dj: (playing dumb) who’s tupac?girl: are you serious? you’ve never heard of tupac?dj: nope. sorry!!  how do you spell it?girl:  T…O…O…P…A…C

    Roctakon on AM

Whenever a “celebrity” passes, especially these days, there is an outpouring of affection. Twitter and Facebook build a wave of digital condolences that are generally from people who didn’t know the person.  I’m guilty of throwing my two cents in as special talents have passed suddenly this year.  Its a way to show respect and admiration even if you didn’t know them personally.

DJ AM felt different for some reason.  Only because if you’re around my age you probably saw him DJ a few times and if you lived in NYC and hung in certain circles there was a good chance you had a friend who knew Adam.

Andy or DJ Roctakon as he’s known by most, worked with my close friends at the Turntable Lab and has been a part of their extended family for a while.  I’ve always gotten along well with him and respected his talent and work ethic.  He spun at a few events I threw years ago when he was just starting to make his name in the industry and he was always professional and ALWAYS created a sick party.

Over the years as he got bigger he became friends with AM and I thought I would share his personal thoughts on his passing as my final word on it.

In our ever expanding digital future, its likely this kind of attitude and steadfast dedication to singular pursuits will be coveted by a few and heralded by many.

“One last thing before I go; just to be forthright, this is only a portion of what I’ve got lined up for you. I have been SERIOUSLY busy in the last 2 years; and very little of it has to do with twittering. At the risk of sounding all corny, I feel the need to say something that’s important to me: I’ve realized recently that I do music, make records, LISTEN to records,  tour, and generally hole myself up in the studio because I love it, not cause its my job. Its become as natural as breathing, and keeps me sane-most of the time.  Im much more concerned with making a timeless record, than with how to sell a record nowadays. Also, if you don’t see me posting left and right on whatever the most current social networking site is, its not cause I don’t like being social, its cause I feel like our time on earth is very very short, and that the most I have to offer this planet in my little window of time here is through the vessel of music.  I would rather leave behind something you can hopefully use a little more than an update on my belly button lint.  Hopefully, a catalog that speaks more volumes than all the blogs I could possibly write in a hundred years.” -John Krohn (RJD2)

On rainy nights like tonight, after having a quiet dinner with my family and then strolling home to a quiet apartment, perhaps practicing piano, checking the internets and such…I sometimes smile in sheer wonder, thinking that somewhere, simultaneously, in a big dark room somewhere…things like this are happening.
