I’m not sure about the KIN product but I like their commitment to the surprise live music experience. Will be curious if their plan is to sustain this kind of program over time.

In the age of shoe gaze, I miss this kind of raw energy in the shows I’ve seen lately in NYC. Oh where have you gone Adam Horovitz.

Performances like this were what made the Beastie Boys the Beastie Boys. You can just feel it, can’t you? This by early BBoys photog Ricky Powell.

1st time ever seeing U2 play last night. I generally have low expectations for stadium shows but I was stunned by the experience. The spaceship stage they built is absolutely next level. This show made The Killers show headlining Coachella feel like a podunk county fair.

360 degree stage, Rotating bridges, wireless instruments, incredible sound quality, smoke machines, disco laser tower that turned the entire stadium into a dance club, hi-def cameras on rotating trolleys around the main stage, an expandable HD hexagon shaped screen that compressed for perfect clarity and expanded to create a tornado of light and video.

This is a video showing the “tornado” screen fully extended with the hexagonal screens lighting up in tune with the start of the song.

UPDATE:  The best crowd video I’ve found that shows the screen extending during Unforgettable Fire

    Birkin on Digital Experience

Michael Birkin, former vice chairman of Omnicom Group and Omnicom Asia-Pacific CEO, recently took a 70% position in RPMC, a leader in events and entertainment marketing.  He had some interesting perspective on why he made the investment and why having a digital strategy should be pervasive throughout the organization and not seen as separate from your other communication channels.

From the MediaPost article: “Michael Birkin believes it’s more about building brands like the Olympics and World Cup with a variety of tools. Every campaign should have a digital component, but not digital for the sake of being digital, he says.”

“You can’t play the World Cup or run 100 meters on the computer,” Birkin says. “We have to make sure we understand the way the digital world can impact our support of brands in live events, such as Olympics, World Cup and Formula One.”

Birkin believes agencies get it wrong by seeing digital as an end in and of itself. The concept he has always struggled with, and continues to struggle with, is when companies try to support digital campaigns for the sake of being digital.

“It’s a bit like saying you go to the Sistine Chapel because Michelangelo was a mathematician,” he says. “The fact that he was a mathematician and could use that perspective meant that he created a better product. The digital world is no different. It’s a question of harnessing what it can do, rather than looking at it as being a digital product. It’s almost an oxymoron.”

While Trent Reznor might not be the most easy going guy in the world, his intelligence, comfort with technology and its place in the live creative experience cannot be ignored.  I was reminded of this again seeing Kanye re-post (yes I occasionally look at Kanye’s blog…what? its good) this video about the NIN interactive stage show that they had on their last tour.

This is a highlight reel from the Moment Factory the team in Canada that developed the system and show with NIN for their 08 tour.

This reminded me alot of the best live show I’ve ever seen - the 2007 Daft Punk tour stop in Coney Island, NY. Daft Punk and Trent Reznor understand that this kind of considered and elevated experience at a concert is what turns a memory into something unforgettable and ignites word of mouth (viral etc).  Its a lesson more brands would do well to consider when they think about the experiences they share with their customers.

After seeing this (and partially cause they are touring with Janes Addiction) I’m swayed to go see there show at Jones Beach for the experience, even though I’m not a big fan.
