“ The scale of the dilemma was underlined recently in Scotland, where scientists — who scoured the watery depths in a submarine hoping to discover evidence of the prehistoric Loch Ness monster — were surprised to find hundreds of thousands of golf balls lining the bed of the loch. ”

What a bummer this must have been: You’re looking for a sea monster and you find a bunch of golf balls.

I never understood how soulless humans could hit golf balls off the backs of cruise ships, which was a common practice for years, with the excuse that the ocean is so big it won’t make a difference.  This anecdote is no less poetically tragic on a smaller scale.
